Sweet Letters, What do you do?

Yoga Instructor, Physical Therapist, Personal Trainer, what do you REALLY do?

As many of you know, I am a physical therapist, a yoga instructor, and a personal trainer.  This is a short list in a long list of things I am.  Many of you have asked over the years, “Oh wow that’s a lot. So how are you going to incorporate ALL OF THAT into a career?”

Well, great freaking question.

Some days, I have no ideas at all.

Other days, I am inspired AF and ready to take on the world.

I have known I wanted to be a physical therapist since I was 16 and tore my ACL forcing me to go through my own ACL rehabilitation.  At the time, I was convinced that my life was over and I would never play sports again.  It was probably the first time I ever experienced mental health issues but at the time, I didn’t know they were mental health issues.  I was frustrated by my inability to run(and I never even liked running before that!).  I was left out of activities because I couldn’t keep up with my friends on crutches.  I was mad that I couldn’t play in the first Varsity Girls Soccer game EVER for my high school.  A dream come to fruition thanks to my dad and a couple of other dads.  My only outlet was physical therapy.  I went three time a week for at least an hour and I poured my heart and soul into it.  I remember in the middle of winter running on the track, following my return to running program.

I waffled back and forth with if physical therapy was the right field and if an intensive 6 year PT program was right for me.  I finally decided to go to Tufts University for a bachelor of science and also play lacrosse (thanks to my awesome PT).

After a severe illness in college and missing my Junior year lacrosse season, I found yoga as my return to running and my new solace.  I found yoga again when struggling post graduate with adjusting to life and then again when I struggled with anxiety for the first time.  When my grandmother passed away, yoga was my solace and again when I didn’t get into a single physical therapy school I applied to. I was devastated and lost as to where to go, I found out my grandmother left me 1,000 dollars enough for the downpayment on my yoga teacher training at Prana Power Yoga.

I didn’t know exactly how it was going to help me in my future but I knew it was where I needed to be right then and there.

And now, looking back on that yoga teacher training, so much changed in me and led me down the path I am on today.  At times, the road has been beautiful and other times it its been downright brutal.

So now, it feels like I have been on this road for a real long time, and at times that is really damn frustrating.

But now, after being in the field for a year, I have learned even MORE about what I want to do in this great big world, and just as much about what I don’t want to do.

One thing that I am really passionate about is, Mindfulness in Sports Rehabilitation.  I even did a whole presentation on it at my final internship at MGH Sports, and I want to share bits and pieces of that with you.

I truly believe that mindfulness and yoga have a HUGE place in physical therapy and sports rehabilitation, and I think if more practitioners put a little bit of mindfulness into their care, their patients would benefit greatly.  I believe that if patients took mindfulness principles, stress reduction principles, and basic breath work into their physical therapy that their mind and body will thank them.

I believe that by treating the patient as a human being and not just a diagnosis on a piece of paper that the healing can go so much deeper than 4-6 weeks.

I think too often people just want to be fixed on the spot with little to no effort.  I think too often people want the next pill, surgery, shot, because that is what our healthcare system has marketed and ingrained into our minds.  You get this surgery and ta-da No Pain.  Take this pill, hurray everything is life is fixed.

While I think Modern Medicine has made amazing advances, I think it has also created a system of do more, see more, go go go, fix, fix, fix, NOW. There is little to no patience in healthcare and healing.

A lot of people expect to to keep the same diets, the same movements, the same sedentary lifestyle and the same patterns of movement.  How do you expect to do the same things every day but get a different result each time? Think that through, How do you expect to feel better in your mind, body and soul while you keep doing the same damn thing that got you here?

So, I am going to be the change I wish to see in this crazy world of modern healthcare by fusing together what I know and what I can learn. I am going to infuse western medicine with eastern philosophies as I continue to learn to better serve my patients.  I am going to coach you and teach you how to feel good in your body so I can help you heal on a deeper level

SO WITH THAT, I AM GOING TO OPEN MY OWN BUSINESS: LIVE GOOD, FEEL GOOD.
